When people ask me about etching cable Damascus I'll usually say, "it will tell you if you've heat treated it right."  You see, if not hardened cable will pattern out muddy and muted.  Here's a little pictorial showing just that.  The three knives all spent the same amount of time in etch together.  The top one was fully hardened, the middle was edge hardened, the bottom somehow didn't go through heat treat.  I had a bunch going, and that happens.  [mad]  But it makes for a good illustration.  The last picture is the bottom knife after being heat treated properly.
