I went to this forging competition this past Saturday with my family. It was on a farm and included 24 blacksmiths from all over America and Jake James from Canada, competing in teams of two. 1st, 2nd and 3rd place prizes were awarded along with people's choice. It really was alot of fun for my whole family! My neighbor's teenaged son went with us so now he wants to start learning next time I light up the forge.

Here are a few pics. Some of the tool kits they brought were fantastic! I especially liked Jake James' tools. I also learned a few things. A few more. The last two pics are of Jake James and his striker. They forged some creepy looking figure. I took those 2 pics because of the clever little frame they made that fit into the hardie hole and held a block of wood to use to punch whatever they wanted and not deform the work or the punch. You can see in the 2nd pic how it had started to burn from use. No problem. Just stick another block of wood in the frame. What were they making?

Rule #10;  "I can make that" translates to; "I'm to cheap to buy it new."

Hello Austin, Looks like a nice venue. Thanks for sharing the pictures. It looks like smiths just needed to show up. All tooling provided?

Whatever they wanted. It was 12 teams of 2, and each team forged whatever they wanted to be judged. I didn't see all the finished products but I did see a coat rack, a meat clever, some sort of cool looking stand, a creepy figure, a bouquet of tulips, a star consisting of 5 wings and what looked like a fancy "D".

It was a nice venue. There were a lot of spectators. The farm's smithy was stocked very well. I only saw one smith bring his own anvil even though there were already a few extras but it looked like everybody brought their personal favorite forging tools.

Being that it was in Austin, which is hardly recognizable as a city in Texas, it felt a little strange being surrounded by so many hippies. The 60 something year old man with a half shaved scalp and long gray hair on the other side of his scalp and skinny jeans dancing on the table looked just like the 20 something year old college student standing next to me, just a lot older. It was amusing.
