Hank Rearden
Hello folks,

I wanted to share an online forge welding webinar On April 7th, 2016, a Thursday evening, at 6 pm Eastern time an ABANA sponsored educational workshop will take place with Mark Aspery and created by Victoria Patti from the BlacksmitHer Radio podcast. It's an interactive webinar with Mark and Victoria. You can asked questions and listen to others as Mark demonstrates different aspects of forge welding.

I participated in the punch and drifting class on my cell phone a few months ago. It was a lot of information on punching and drifting given by an expert. Mark didn't only show how to do the task, he also explained the why the techniques worked. This concept is great. Especially for someone who wants to learn blacksmithing skills and does not have access to a local instructor.

I recommend trying a class to see if it works for you.  Plus the webinar is saved so you can review it at a later time at your convenience. Like when you're trying to improve your skill set. It make a great reference.

Here are the links for more information. I'll see you in class.

Here is the checkout page for the Forge Welding course - Copy and paste in your window address bar.

I just wanted to give you and update on the webinar. I bought the subscription for the Forge welding webinar. It was about 23 bucks with a discount for being and ABANA member. Forge welding isn't something I've been able to accomplish yet. I'm currently half way through the webinar and man oh man it's been a wealth of knowledge for me.

Here's the concept, The webinar is hosted by Victoria Patti from BlacksmitHer Radio. The instructor is Mark Aspery. During the webinar you can ask Mark Questions. He started with a simple lesson on welding physics. Then on heating and identifying color and changes in metal during welding heats.

I'm writing this after watching about 30 minutes of the almost two hour demonstration. All different skill sets were represented during the presentation. Unfortunately I had a family emergency during the original broadcast and was unable to participate live. However tonight I can watch it and that's what I'm doing. This is what is good about this concept. After taking a virtual class I can go back and reference any part I'm having trouble with. So far there have been stationary images as well as actual video with Mark explaining what's happening.

I just finished the welding webinar. It was an in-depth primer for forge welding. I was most interested in the images of the forge weld showing the structure changes of the steel viewed under a scope. A little fact that the weld area becomes iron.

Mark covered a variety of tips on making welds from types of scarfs to how to bring in the proper heat and the how's and whys in theory to create a successful forge weld plus a lot more information. I would have liked to been there live when the webinar was scheduled. Even though I wasn't this presentation was excellent. I will be (if things work out) at the next class.

I think it's with Monica Coyne on her technique on the sliding dovetail joint.

Overall I give it an A+ and look forward to seeing more from Victoria Patti and this type of educational platform for blacksmiths.

I think you can still buy this one. I'm not sure but I can't think of why it wouldn't be. It was a lot of information. I'm  going to follow some of these tips next time I forge and plan on posting the results.

Please do.  It's getting good working weather, we need to see you back at the forge.  [thumb]

Rule #10;  "I can make that" translates to; "I'm to cheap to buy it new."
