Dustin Stephens
Hello all,
My name is Dustin and I am new to blacksmithing.  I caught the bug a few months ago and have been gearing up to smash some metal.  So far I have a brake drum, a hammer, and tons of willingness to learn the craft.  Im supposed to be reciving my 50lb anvil this weekend (fingers crossed).  I also enjoy old military guns, welding, playing my vintage telecaster, old VW's, and Im a volunteer fireman in my spare time.  I look forward to learning and contributing alot on this forum. Cheers

Welcome aboard Justin.  This craft can be addictive.  What kind of anvil are you waiting on?

My buddy said he was given one by his boss just to get rid of it, He thinks its a 50lber but dont know if its cast, forged or wrought or if it has the holes in it.  i hope it is forged with hardy and pritchel holes, but its free so i cant complain

I always tell young smiths' to develop the "magnetic" personality.  That is, people will start bringing you steel and iron.  Sounds like you've already started.

Welcome, Dustin! I like James' "magnetic" personality advice. That's good advice!

Yeah, I always try to get along with everyone, and if someone has something that they dont want or have no use for it, it usually ends up behind my shed as long as a magnet sticks to it.  The wife loves that [biggrin]  Heck I even got a boat load of old tools for cleaning my buddys rifle one time.

Welcome to the party. The hunt for tools is as addictive has forging itself. Good luck with your hunt for the anvil. I'm going to scout an auction soon. I'll post what I see there. Auction is in Central PA. A good drive from Kentucky.

Hank, the way its looking, the drive might be worth it being as anvils around here are as rare as hens teeth[biggrin]
