I thought this might be a nice way to let folks journal their work.

I created this category in the forum so people can journal what they did and tried or learned blacksmithing.

I'm leaving it opened for commentary from others. But I might close it so that just the journalist can post under their names.

Pros vs Cons?

Don't forget everyone has a photo album under their profile.

Hank R.,
What is it you are looking for, entries about how you got started, how you built your shop; maybe how you progressed from day one of your Blacksmithing inspiration ?

I noticed you said, "Journalist" so I am thinking you want a "from the beginning thing" !

Just wondering,
Thanks

I wished I had taken notes while I was starting out. I don't know if I can remember much. Comments turn into conversations, kind of cluttered things up. I've seen private thread for projects and a separate thread for comments.

Was thinking further.. oh no !

If someone starts a journal, do they continue in the same post ?

I would think you would want a running journal, continuous ?

How will anyone following be notified about any updates, I don't think updating a post give any notification ?

Some how each journal needs to be a separate thread, allowing notifications and following !

Also, as Metalmelt has stated, "comments need to be held to a minimum", maybe limit comment in length.  A Journal is a report of a happening, how each person writes their journal is a reflection of their experiences, any comments need to be edited somehow or limited.  We don't need comments putting a stop to a person's creative writing !  LoL !

Those are all great questions. So to start, anybody can start a journal. They can start today or they can think back to what they could remember and start from there. I'm still not sure how to set up each thread. I was thinking to make everyone who starts a journal a moderator for their thread. They can either allow post from other people or not. I'm also working on script that would allow your photo album to show up in your first post.

There is an option on the bottom of each thread for you to be notified of new Post in that particular thread.

Interesting idea allowing moderating of your own Journal Thread !

That would take care of Notifications when a new post was added.

I think it is a good idea.

Will L et people know how each person got started and how the progressed or didn't progress.

When do you think the Journals will be up and running ?

Every thread I've replied to sends me emails of updates.  Also, threads I've started.

You could just make a "journal" category.

I can't imagine why someone would post their journal on a public forum and wish others NOT to comment.  Unless someone is really that into themselves.
Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

The idea that I brought up about notifications is IF each Journal was in one post, not a bunch of posts within a thread, if there was one posting and each person would add to that posting, to increase their Journal, then the notifications would get screwed up.  If each person had their own thread then notifications would go out as usual and you could Follow each Thread you wanted.

And YES, I would think also, that someone writing a journal on a Site of this nature would want comments, the actual power of a moderator over their journals... I never thought of that but I do like the idea.  The reason is because there is always one person that doesn't like what you did, what you do, how you say something, and make a derogative comment that the OP wishing would go away and the ability to Moderate our own Journals, and only our own, helps and should make commenters think about their posting because it could go away !  IMHO that is !

As far as your statement, "Unless someone is really that into themselves" !   Not sure what the implication is but writing a Journal isn't like posting a comment, or a Thread about something you just did and want an opinion on, as I said in an earlier post, IMHO, "a Journal is a report of a happening, how each person writes their journal is a reflection of their experiences",  some people will like how I write it some won't but !  It is what it is, I'll leave it at that.

I am sure it will turn out the way the Admin plans and it will work for everyone, a great idea it is !

I see.

All in all, I like the idea as Hank has suggestsd it. I really love the possibility of having our album tied to the journal. It could help me document more of what goes through my head during the creative process.

I'm going to see how this might work this week. I've been bomb busy this week. Not much free time to get this moving just busy dodging bombs. Anyway I'm going to take a run at it to see if the ideas can easily be put to work here. I think a journal would be nice on several areas.

I'll probably take part in that.  It's interesting to go back sometimes and see where you've come from.  Every now and then, when I can't get the metal to do what I want it to do, I get frustrated and feel like throwing the whole idea out.  Then I see my first pair of tongs laying on the table, and I realize how far I've come and how much practice it took to get there... as well as how much further I have to go.

So what's the word on this project?

So anyone interested in doing a journal go ahead and get started.

Just go under the main Journal category and create title name.
Use whatever you like as a name. I will go in and make you a moderator so you can control the input on your journal.

I'm still working on finding scripting to bring over a photo gallery from your profile page. Nothing I've done so far is working. I know that there's a solution I just have to find it.

I want these to be as original as you but I think I want to make real simple guidelines so there's some uniformity.

So far no solution to populating the photo albums.  So for the time being you'll need to use the url or a hot link.

Start a thread Then I'll create a new category and enable your ability to moderate. And move your thread to your new category. Once I have set this up you'll be able to control the content in your journal. You will also have the new designation of "Journal Moderator" under your avatar photo.

To ensure consistency and form in the forum I request that projects or activities you write about or new threads be placed in the appropriate forum category and then use a link from the Journal the category page if you want to include it in your journal.  There will also be a section in your profile page to add the journal url link to your profile if you wish.

Below are the permissions I'll set up for your Journal all those with a check mark
