I went to an auction a week and a half ago to bid on a huge lot of tools that came from Amsterdam. The auction house described them as "primitive tools" and I only recognized about half of them, but the one that really caught my eye was a 22" stake anvil.

I ended up being out bidded on the lot but I tracked down the lady who won it at her flea market shop. After a little chit chat she sold me the stake anvil for $35! Woo hoo!

It has something stamped into the side that I can't make out and all I know about it is that it came from Amsterdam. It has two pritchel holes for some reason and it looks like its original color may have been red.

I can say I'm green with envy. Nice score. The size really makes it nice as well as the round a square shapes.

I wouldn't mind having that.  Nice score.

Rule #10;  "I can make that" translates to; "I'm to cheap to buy it new."

Lol, yeah I am pretty excited to have been able to track it down and get it from her at a good price. There are all kinds of stake anvils and bickerns all over the internet but I have only seen one that is very similar to the one I bought. Now I wish I knew a little more about it.

I'm going to set it up on a tall thin stump with a triangular base for detail work.

Definitely a sweet score. I've been looking for one as well. Thought about trying to make one.

Thanks. I would give it a shot if I were you. I plan to make a smaller one with a harder surface as this one was probably a coppersmith or tinsmith's anvil. The face is too soft for anything more than small detail work. I have a lot of RR rail of various lengths so I hope to shape one and harden the surface.
