Scrambler82
Hello,
I am an old guy trying to learn a new hobby.
I moved to SoCal, just north of San Diego, from Gloucester, MA, miss the water and the winter, but not the cold.  I worked many years back as a Blacksmith in a Commercial Company called the "Cape Ann Tool Company".  We used Board Drop Hammer, ranging from 500 lbs to 5,00 lbs and a 10,000 lbs Steam Hammer.
I do things very slowly, not in movement speed but in mental speed, I just take longer than most to do things; need time to think it through and change things in my mind before I do it ! (OCD/ADD, maybe a little PTSD too)
I have an Anvil, PW 162lbs, and a new Gas Forge, 2-burner, but have not used them for  blacksmithing becauseI got caught up in the building of my stands for each of my tools.  Both stands almost done ! I have some hammers but from my AutoRebuilding not Blacksmithing Tools, don't even know if they will work.
I am building a 1982 Jeep Scrambler, long term project that the wife would like finished, me too, ground up build !

Added Note:  Just so it is up front,I was a member of another site, "I Forge Iron", I like the Site, I liked the Members but for some reason when I posted a Spoof Thread about how all the threads go off topic so fast, I was accused by a Moderator of posting a "Stupid Post" and that I was Drunk and should come back after I sober up".  I was also put on something called "Moderating Post"...Indefinitely !
I asked to have the Warning reviewed and was told it was the Site and nothing could be done.  In my own defense, I have had two words in my time on the site that were considered "improper", never complained.  I do not drink a lot... because I am allergic to something in alcohol, I know that's not fun.
So to make this short I decided rather than argue it back and forth, I posted a thank you to all of the people that have assisted me and signed out. I do not have immediate plans to return to the site, I will miss some of the humor but I will live and hope I can gain help and knowledge in another site.

Sorry for getting wordy, will try not to in the future, thanks for reading and listening !

Howdy from 'bama.  We try to be a little more light hearted and easy going.  We haven't lost our sense of humor in that sense.

Within the group of blacksmiths I am around, I have never seen that. Odd and unfortunate.

I hope we will not have similar issues arise.

We should start a "I Hate I Forge Iron" thread.  Yeah, I'd be on there.

Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

No... that's not a good idea !
There are a lot of good people over there and there is no reason to subject them to a hate flinging game !

I am resentful of no action being taken to correct what I thought was an incorrect decision and for the Moderator making the statements that he did but it is what it is !

Thanks for the thought though !

Another thought, Mikey on IFI, is very knowledgable on Gas Burners !  He has designed his own and they are being sold by a number of companies under different names for around $199, i.e. Mikey Burner, Demon Burner !   So just in case someone here is in need of info on his or gas burners in general, might be a good idea not to start something, no burning bridges.

I posted the info above only to let people know that I was there, had a problem and moved on !

The 'idea' (while it was a joke) wasn't really about you.  I belong to several forums.  I'm one of the experts at a copier technician forum (I specialize in HP printer repair).  I contribute to some open source software forums.  I just recently started in a tie-dye forum.  I used to take active roll in several marketing forums.  In all specialty forums, you have newbs come in and ask a question that's been asked a thousand times before.  If you're a nice guy, you answer it or link to a thread where it's already been answered.  If you're not super nice, you just ignore it--after all, it's their own fault for not doing a simple search.

But in I Forge Iron, a lot of experts there take an active approach to smacking down anyone who dares to ask something 'improperly.'  They take time out of their day, to insult people who 'waste' their time... when it's only a waste of time for them to answer at all.

I don't know this through experience, I just searched through their archives for a few questions and was kind of sickened by the overall nastiness on the entire site.  Not just by one or two moderators, but by most of the participants.  It's mean by design.

I think I had joined and had planned to take part in some conversations, but quickly realized I wanted nothing to do with people like that.

Or perhaps the site itself isn't supposed to be something for newbs.  I guess it's entirely possible that it was, from the start, meant to be a gathering hole for seasoned experts.  Perhaps they resent newbies asking a question.  To me, it would make sense for them to eliminate the stupid questions by creating an approval process that people have to go through before being allowed to talk.

Anyway, that's how I see it.  Maybe I'm just grumpy today.
Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

OK, sorry for any misunderstanding but it was in this post so I went for it.

I have nothing against the guys on the site, all answered any questions I asked.

I just didn't want to be the cause of a dispute !

I joined IFI years ago and have sadly watched it go from a very friendly, informative site to a bunch of
ARROGANT anal orifices that I no longer wish to communicate with .........

Your story is similar to my story. Which is why I started this forum. I still have a profile on IFI but I don't use it. This is a good post. The rukes here are simple be nice and for the most part that's what everyone here has been.

Welcome to the forum glad you're here.

Everyone still has a profile on IFI, so they can brag about how big their membership is. My profile is still there but I can't log in, I told them to remove it and they didn't. No member list, secret Mods, and the admin doesn't monitor much, he let's his minions run off anyone they deem unworthy.

I really like their Sword section. They tell you to read the two stickies about making swords. If you read them, they basically say YOU can't make a sword because you are unworthy.

Interesting that you guys have ptsd from ifi.
I joined last year and was very much into it, made friends with a few of the older members who are very nice. You get to know them in the chat room. Once after a long chat I said I have to get my ass in gear to get this job done. (I wrote ass as in donkey not a#se as in the body part) I was dragged over hot coals by a particularly nasty 'agitator' and no amount of grammatical explanation made any difference. I was told that I now had a black mark against my name that will never expire or be removed. I thought I was in the DDR.
Another time I protested against the nastiness of some replies to a new person, only to be called names by one of the most active posters in several private messages. I have since lost enthusiasm and it is a pity since I do like many of the members there. A few Australians and UK members are real nice and very knowledgable and not surprisingly are less active.
Looking back, it seems that the history of IFI is littered with bodies scattered on the side of the road. What could be a site comparable with anvil fire, is but a shell of resentful and grumpy people who mostly make knifes or talk about knifes and steel anyway, something I have no interest in. Not many professionals if any at all.

The last nail in the coffin for me was the shutting down of the open chat and the making of a new version that needs an invitation to join. I asked for an invitation many times and finaly got one that lasted one day and expired. Then asked again for one that does not expire and was told I have to download an application for it. Well, there is no such thing, it simply needs an invitation that does not expire. I suppose that if I am not welcome I don't need to be there. Still log in from time to time to see if Das or ID or Mooney are around.

Sad really.

I understand and always wondered why the Chat Room was closed and I never was asked to join, not that I wanted to join; I think I visited the old room three times in the time I was there.

Just before my post about Not staying on thread, I posted to an English Guy about English Slang words and said I liked the term "getting pissed", and I posted directly after that the explanation of the term say it was to get drunk.  I too got the "Irreversible finger of fate" !

It wasn't that I said things that were wrong, my post is gone and my responses are gone... just to Cover Their A____, but there was no rebuttal, no explanation accepted and no reversing their decisions.  I tried to explain about England Slang and the way the word was being used but someone somewhere made a decision and that was that !

Thanks to all for posting, it is too bad, there are a lot of good guys there, a lot of knowledge that may never get past the Moderators... the Administrator !

I went to IFI, just to see if there was any notifications for me.
Glenn had sent me a message, one that stated the incident was being discussed !
It has been almost two weeks since the first time I was told it was being discussed and still nothing is happening, what did I expect, I am not a special member.

As to the Chat Room... being a invite only..., and from postings it is "under construction", it may be the discussion room for all anyone knows, who know who's in it, who knows what is said...  a secret organization inside of what is called a Public Web Site.. LoL !   Just me talking to myself...  !

I have once. It's like texting.

Seems IFI is an odd place. . . rather out of character for blacksmiths.
Firstly, no blacksmith I know- whether he be in the trade for forty years or four days- has ever been uncivil to anyone. Everyone is willing to give information or help or contribute in some way with anyone, and if they can't, they'll point you to someone who can. It's quite incredible.
There's a large range of smiths, from master blade smiths to sculptural iron workers to brass and copper forgers and all various bits and bobs and everything under the sun. And while they all have their own views and mindsets, they won't discourage you from doing anything, especially if you're new. They may warn you, but they won't tell you not to. (Unless you ask in which case they'll make sure to correct your error so you can improve!)
Lastly, not one has a clean mouth. XD They're the nicest guys in the world but swear words are no strangers to them.

I forgot to mention one thing about the Chat Room on IFI.. I really don't give a S*** !
I never saw the need to chat, my PTSD gets in the way a lot so I don't get in situations, like I have with them now, where I put myself out there and got called on it.
I am pretty open type of person, I say what I mean, my wife has a problem with that one, and I mean what I say, I don't need someone lurking around behind my back, watching everything I write, just to call me out !

I am still a member there, may not be much longer but when I USED to post, I got to a point where I had to watch each and every word, no swearing... ok, but how I would say something was being Called out.   I liked the place, Thomas Powers, Frosty, and many others, to me were good guys, yes a little grumpy but so am I !

I am sorry that the Moderator, either had a bad morning or had it out for me, because what I posted was only called the fact of too many topic changes in a post, I added a few pictures of my own and made a joke of it but I think the Admin, Glenn, is now backing the Moderator, not sure because he won't post anything that says anything more than just "We are discussing it" !

All in all, I liked IFI, its just the there is too much going on in the background and that bothers me.

Thanks for listening,
