Here are some recent projects. 1st up, a Crane Cable Bowie forged from 3 pc of 3/4" fine wired cable with cocobolo handle.

Next up is a cable san mai Bowie.  The billet started with 2 identical billets forged from 3 pc of 9/16" cable with band saw steel in between.  The a piece of 80crv2 cutlery steel was forged between them and the blade shaped.  An antler crown handle was attached.

Finally, finished this one today.  A 72 layer Ladder pattern Damascus with Redwood burl handle and brass fixtures.

How strong is that cable steel?


Are those guards also made from cable?

Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

There are several different cables out there.  The most common are IPS (Improved Plow Steel) which is about 1065.  Extra IPS is about 1075, it seems to be what I run into the most.  Extra Extra IPS is around 1090.  Welding must be done  properly, but once you learn how to weld it things go pretty easy. 

Other cables can't or shouldn't be used.  Galvanized cable should be avoided as the zinc burns off and is poisonous.   Stainless cable won't weld.

Is there any way to tell?  My dad brought home a giant cable used in an elevator a long time ago when I was a kid, and I think he still has it somewhere.  I was thinking of swiping part of it.

Elevator cable should be good stuff.  Some cable has a rope in the center, that must be removed (I usually avoid those). 

When the cable welds up there is a decarb zone that forms around the wires that equals around .10 the wires diameter.  So if you are working with cable with small wires, .020 for example, half the carbon will be lost during the forge welding process.  That leave you with a blade that is .4% carbon which means it will be a pretty sorry blade.

If you do work with cable, when you get the weld process down we can revisit this.  I have developed a cheat to deal with the decarb and even boost carbon content.

Ok.  I'm going to get a section to start with sometime in the next couple of weeks, weld it together, and stick it in the forge to make a billet.  Before that, though, I need to put something on the bottom of my propane forge to protect the lining.

If he still has it, I have plenty enough to play with.  If I remember right, it was the ENTIRE cable for a 4 story building.

Good plan, welding cable is a messy thing.  My forge is built to be easily relined because of it.
