The reason their site is popular is because of Google. People like me want to know more about blacksmithing, because I saw Forged On Fire or whatever that show is, and thought knife-making looks fun. So people like me google "blacksmith forums" and guess what comes up first? People like me go to that forum, join, and either ask a question while introducing oneself, or just read for a while. I can't remember if I asked a question or not... I just remember how bizarre the site seemed. Marc is right... it's like there's religious reverence for certain things. But not the kind of religion where people see someone on the outside and convince them to come in--more like a secret society where "if you play your cards right and say what we want you to say the way we want you to say it, we might consider letting you be part of the group."
Anyway, this site, as the number of posts and active members go up, will increase in popularity. It takes time, but it will happen. Aren't there also some big names on that site... some of the people who were on that show?
Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?
